Road work on northbound I-81 in Southern Franklin County is causing delays and disruptions this weekend. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that the work includes completing a barrier on the northbound I-81 at the Milnor Road overpass, just under two miles north of the Maryland state line.
The installation of the concrete barrier began on Friday and is expected to be completed by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, July 13. During this time, a right lane restriction will be in place, potentially causing delays for drivers.
Most of the work will be performed at night, but the right lane restriction will remain in place throughout the weekend to allow the concrete to cure. PennDOT also mentioned that paving in the southbound direction started on Friday night, with the first layer of paving expected to be completed in 2 to 3 weeks. Once that layer is finished, they will begin the final wearing course.
This resurfacing project involves milling, concrete patching, asphalt resurfacing, guiderail updates, signage, and pavement markings on both northbound and southbound I-81 from the Maryland State Line to Milepost 6, including ramps within the project limits.
While this work is necessary for maintaining the infrastructure, it inevitably leads to disruptions in traffic flow and potential delays for drivers. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and consider alternative routes if possible. PennDOT's efforts to improve the road conditions should ultimately benefit the safety and efficiency of travel on I-81 in Southern Franklin County.
